Happy Birthday, Theodor Seuss Geisel

Today's Dr. Seuss's birthday! Dr. Seuss, aka Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born in Massachusetts back in 1904. He credits his ability to create stories from his mother. she would recite rhymes she remembered from her childhood to soothe her children. Seuss spent some time at Dartmouth College as Editor-in-Chief of the Jack-O-Lantern, Dartmouth's humor magazine. He then moved on to Oxford University in England, where he eventually met his future wife, Helen Palmer. His studies couldn't keep his attention and he decided to tour Europe instead.

His first book "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" was published by vanguard around 1937. He continued writing more literary works including The Cat in the Hat; If I Ran the Zoo; and Hunches in Bunches. Some people don't realize that he also wrote some books for adults like The Seven Lady Godivas; Oh, The Places You'll Go!; and You're Only Old Once.

Geisel died on Sept. 24, 1991 and his wife, Audrey Stone Dimond, currently heads the Dr. Seuss Enterprises.
