Hadrian’s Walls by Robert DraperI read this book a few summers ago. I had gotten it from my Creative Writing professor, Dan Pope, as a writing prize. The story is about a boy from Shepherdsville, Texas who lives a tough life. In his teens he kills a man and is sentenced to 50 yrs in prison. Years later he escapes, hides out, and is eventually pardoned. As an older man who spent most of his life in prison and on the run, he tries to live life in a town centered on the prison system. Most of the people who live in Shepherdsville from the architects to the security workers to the landscapers work in the prison system.
Adjusting back to life in the town he grew up in proves to be difficult when his old friend Sonny is the new Prison Director and is also married to the girl he had a crush on as a young boy. I don’t want to ruin or spoil the story but things happen that makes it difficult for him to stay on the straight and narrow but also stay loyal to his long time friend.
I really enjoyed this book. It’s hard for me to like something that I can continue reading passed chapter one. The ending came full circle and I was satisfied (unlike how Angel ended).
